Explore, Expand, Transform

Subtopia

The past is being paved over with modern suburbia. Can you bring about the promise of suburban paradise?

But what is paradise? And is a paradise for some, not a paradise for all?

Meet Subtopia! A tile placement game for 1 – 5 players with light strategy. Its small size and minimalist design makes it quick to set up and play. Players must transform the land paving away the way for suburbs and large developments, and then compete against each other trying to maximise their investment profits.

No game arrangement ever plays the same. Explore old lands, expand the suburbs and struggle for suburban utopia with each tile.

Live the Suburban Dream

"The old smelly city is no place to raise a family. The suburbs will be calm, especially with a large house and a big yard. Think of the neighbours, think of the freedom.”

- Body Corporate Bill

Transform the use of Land

Keep the dreams of homeownership alive. Transform the land and sprawl the suburbs over rural land. Change the suburbs into giant developments with massive car parks

Interconnected Whole

We are all one people, yet we live as if divided. Suburbs are often built in pieces that don’t make something whole. An example of dialectical materialism, all pieces of this town are interconnected, and part of the same whole. There is a limited way to put the tiles together, yet a large group has no single layout.

Everchanging Town

All pieces of this town can connect, but the layout changes every time you play. The tiles have an aperiodic design that allows the greatest variation of arrangements.

Cooperative // Single Player Impossible Puzzle

You can play this game as a giant jigsaw puzzle. Either with yourself or others. Try to fit all parts of the town together perfectly! This starts off simple but gets more difficult as more tiles get added.

Subtopia is a surreal strategy board game set in a suburban dreamscape where everyday neighborhoods unravel into cosmic enigmas. Players navigate suburban grids that morph into constellations, factories, and realms beyond reality. It's Monopoly meets Blade Runner meets Tarot.

Players take turns flipping tiles on a modular board representing suburban neighborhoods. Each tile reveals either utopian homes or dystopian industry. Power cards (like The Magician or The Zoning Enforcer) shift the landscape. Strategy, luck, and the occasional dice roll from the cosmos determine your fate.

Subtopia fuses narrative storytelling, social commentary on urban sprawl and imperialism, and a high-concept visual universe—think cosmic Tarot meets zoning maps. It's part game, part art piece, part critique of modern life.

The visual direction draws inspiration from 19th-century engravings, cyberpunk aesthetics, tarot symbolism, and cosmic surrealism. Art direction leans on styles similar to the Flammarion Engraving, RWS Tarot, and Blade Runner 2049's moody neon noir.

Sort of. Subtopia is every suburban neighborhood you've known—just warped by imperial ambition, cosmic forces, and forgotten myth. If you've ever walked your dog past a Target and wondered about the stars, you’ve been to Subtopia.

Yes! The Magician card allows you to manipulate tiles or outcomes using “cosmic insight.” Other archetypes include The Planner, The Settler, and The Disruptor. Each has unique abilities and risks.

2 to 6 players. The game is best enjoyed with 3–5 for the full suburban conflict-to-cosmos chaos ratio.

Not at all. If you’ve ever played Settlers of Catan or Carcassonne, you’ll pick it up quickly. And the rich visuals make it easy to stay immersed and strategize.
