Hi, my name is Carlos, I am the designer of Subtopia. This is the first game that I am launching publically.
I designed a few board games for fun, a lot of which I kept to myself, except for when I played with a friend group. I am quite shy but I do enjoy the dream of socialising and the teamwork that comes from boardgames.
Subtopia was created from the efforts of designing an older game. From that experience we learnt a lot, and in 2024 a completely new game emerged, transformed from older ideas into newer ones.
I didn’t have a target originally, but I wanted a game that was quite minimalist and didn’t have too many props, as those are games I enjoy playing. It was a struggle to get right.
The game tiles represent the intertwined nature of Dialectical Materialism, where there is a limited way to put the tiles together, yet a large group has no single layout. Additionally, the suburbs are designed to follow a mode of reproduction. When individual tiles interact, through their road connections, they reproduce the conditions for the suburbs to grow or transform into giant car parks.
